Choosing Your Exterior

While many of my clients spend ages choosing the perfect interior paint schemes to match their imaginative and creative designs, they often forget about the exterior of their home. Kerb appeal is very important these days, and having a beautiful exterior to your home will make your home worth much more, not to mention make it a nicer place to live. I like to advise my clients about how to make the outside of their property look just as good as the inside by choosing the right type of exterior paint colors to match the style of their home.

What To Consider

If you are lucky enough to have a home which can have an exterior paint job, there are so many different options to choose from. When painting the outside of a property, however, it’s important to keep in mind that you’re not just thinking about one color – there is the siding, the trim and the accents to consider. You should always bear in mind the environment around your home too – do you really want to be the only bright blue house in a street full of white properties? When choosing the siding color – the largest area of paint for your property – you need to think hard about what you want to achieve before you begin.

The Trim

Usually, a lighter color is chosen for the trim to make the home look more attractive and dynamic. Whites, grays and pale cream are all good choices for this element of your property.

Adding Accents

Adding some attractive and colorful accents to your home is one way to add fun to your décor Accents can be added to a front door or shutters and can either be a classic dark shade such as brown or black, or something much brighter to make a statement such as green, blue or red.

Some of the most popular combinations for homes these days include:

Classic Greys

For a subtle, yet attractive suburban property, a classic grey siding always looks stylish. Pair this with an antique white trim and then add some subtle brown accents to the door, window sashes and gable panels for extra depth.

The Tuscan Look

If you want to achieve a more exotic, Mediterranean feel for your home, the Tuscan style is the best option. Use a colorful orange or yellow paint for your siding and then add attractive white trims to highlight the colorful approach.

Cape Cod Style

The classic Cape Cod look involves a white property with beautiful blue touches to summon to mind a seaside landscape. Paint the siding a bright white and then add blue shutters and a blue front door to highlight the vibe.

Victorian Splendor

If you live in an older period property, you can make the most of the antique look by choosing a perfect old fashioned exterior color scheme. Dark sage greens and antique browns look wonderful when painted onto the siding, while the trim looks fantastic in a deep bordeaux or dark brown shade. Add white accents such as front door pillars and your home will look like it has stepped out of a history book.
